Life Steps Camp

- Design and build a pavilion with fire pit and grill.
- We are in need of volunteers to lead horses and/or to sidewalk next to riders with disabilities. No experience necessary as all training will be provided.
- Looking for volunteers to participate in nightly activities with Medina Creative Housing residents.
SPOTLIGHT: VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR
Medina Creative Housing’s (MCH) Volunteer of the Year Award is given once a year to a friend of MCH who goes above and beyond sharing their time, talent and treasures to ensure that MCH continues to expand its programs and provides opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
This year, we couldn’t pick just one volunteer so our 2014 Volunteers of the Year are sisters Paige and Hannah Smith. They have been volunteering at Medina Creative Therapy Ranch for the past two years. Both girls are students at Buckeye High School and are very active in their Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter and church. Paige is the Vice President and Hannah is the secretary of their FFA chapter.
Paige owns her own horse, a retired thoroughbred named Mia and enjoys training her for future horse shows. Hannah owns a beautiful rabbit named London. Both girls have a love of horses and a love for helping individuals with disabilities. In her acceptance speech , Hannah shared some moving words with the audience:
“Volunteering at Medina Creative Therapy Ranch was the best decision I ever made. A little over a year ago, my twin sister Paige and I started going a couple days a week during the winter, just to have something to do. Paige had recently lost her beloved friend Sem (an Arabian horse) to colic, and had considered quitting horses altogether.
After much contemplation she began volunteering, and the pure passion Sharon, the volunteers, and the horses have, along with …the overwhelming joy it brings to the riders, changed her mind very quickly. Without that change we may not have had the Ex-Racehorse (OTTB) Mai that we love and cherish today.
I also learned quite a bit at the barn – about horses, people, life, but most importantly…. about myself. Each Saturday that summer cleaning stalls became enjoyable, knowing that I would see the familiar faces of happy children later that evening. Every Tuesday I go I am inspired more and more by each volunteer, child, and parent. Without this barn, I feel as though I would have never realized what it is I hope to do with my life; become a Special Education teacher.
I also hope to continually volunteer for many more years, alongside my sister. To anyone who has even the slightest idea about volunteering… DO IT!”
Paige and Hannah are very dedicated to our program and help to make it a success. We appreciate all that they do!
